Sinclair Health Clinic proudly hosted its second annual Terry Awards on March 20, 2025, at Winchester Brew Works, celebrating the exceptional dedication of its volunteers and partners. Named in honor of the clinic’s co-founder, Dr. Terry Sinclair, the event recognized individuals and organizations who embody his enduring legacy of compassion, service, and community impact.
Steve Zuckerman Named Volunteer of the Year
With an extraordinary 33 years of service, Steve Zuckerman, Sinclair Health Clinic’s longest-serving volunteer, was honored as Volunteer of the Year. Steve joined the Board of Directors in 1992, serving for eight years. He then obtained his pharmacy technician license and has been faithfully filling prescriptions at the clinic every week for over three decades.
A recently uncovered 1997 newspaper article highlighted his unwavering commitment, noting that he was following in the footsteps of his father, former Winchester Mayor Charles Zuckerman. At the time, Steve remarked, “I don’t see a time when I wouldn’t be a clinic volunteer. It gives a boost to my life. It’s good for the soul. And the people who work at the clinic are a super group of people.”
Thirty years later, those words remain true. With over 7,000 volunteer hours, Steve is a cornerstone of the clinic’s mission. Accepting his award, he shared, “We have a good time in the pharmacy. I work with a great bunch of people. Volunteering at this clinic is good for me. It gives me a sense of purpose. Thank you for the award.”
Diane Sinclair Receives the Legacy Award
The Legacy Award was presented to Diane Sinclair, wife of Dr. Terry Sinclair and a steadfast champion of the clinic since its inception. Working tirelessly behind the scenes, Diane played an integral role in ensuring the clinic’s success, serving on the Endowment and Fundraising Committees and leading Taste of the Town for many years. Her unwavering dedication helped secure the resources needed for the clinic’s continued growth.
Upon receiving the award, Diane expressed heartfelt gratitude: “I am not often surprised, but I am surprised and speechless. I know Jim and Terry are over the moon because they never dreamed that 39 years later, the Free Medical Clinic would still be serving the people in this community who need it the most. I can only say thank you to each of you.”
Rev. Jim Utt Honored with Legacy Award
Sinclair Health Clinic also recognized Rev. Jim Utt with a Legacy Award for his pioneering role in establishing the clinic. In December 1985, he convened the first meeting of the Free Medical Clinic Task Force, and just a month later, he was elected Chair of the Board of Directors. Over the years, he worked tirelessly to secure funding, support volunteers, and transform Friendship Fire Hall into a fully operational clinic.
Named an honorary board member in 2000, Rev. Utt continued his commitment to the clinic, leading its 25th-anniversary celebration in 2011. While he was unable to attend the ceremony, his son-in-law, Bob Thomas, accepted the award on his behalf, delivering a message from Rev. Utt: “Thank you for honoring me for doing my part in this important mission. May God continue to bless Sinclair Health Clinic, its exceptional staff, and dedicated volunteers.”
Shenandoah University’s School of Health Professions Recognized as Community Partner of the Year
The Community Partner Award was presented to Shenandoah University’s School of Health Professions in recognition of its outstanding contributions to the clinic’s mission. Board Chair Dr. Colette Sabbagh highlighted the school’s impact across multiple disciplines, including Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Mental Health Services, all of which have strengthened the clinic’s ability to provide comprehensive care to those in need. Shenandoah University President Dr. Tracy Fitzsimmons accepted the award on behalf of the university.
A Celebration of Service and Impact
The Terry Awards serve as a powerful reminder of the unwavering dedication of Sinclair Health Clinic’s volunteers and community partners. Their commitment continues to make a profound difference in the lives of thousands of patients, ensuring that the clinic remains a beacon of hope and healing for the Winchester community.
